Winters are about to knock our door – the season with the best of food, pleasant afternoon, holiday mood, but it also induces the risk of catching a cold or flu and fever. Therefore, it is very essential to take care of your diet and the surroundings. Winter is the apt weather for bacteria to survive and breed, another thing is the decrease in temperature reduces our body’s immunity, which makes our body more susceptible to falling ill than any other time of the year. There are certain food products which should be avoided during winters in order to remain fit and healthy. Here is the list:
It is advisable to avoid dairy products like cheese, cream, buttermilk, yogurt and milk during cold weather as it affects the digestion process. If you are suffering from bad throat, congestion these food items will make the mucus thick, which can make your condition worse.
During winters, strawberries are pale in color therefore it lacks nutrient value. The more color, the higher the phytonutrient content, that is why it is an appropriate food to be consumed in summers. Although, berries are refreshingly juicy but due to storage and transit issues they get deprived of nourishment.
3. Sugary Food
Food products which are high in sugar weakens the immune system. I know it’s difficult to keep a control on your mouth, when it comes to a cup of hot chocolate or Gulab jamun or a cake or sweetened cereals, or cold beverages but they will make your condition worse. They also have an adverse effect on the body as it impacts the blood cells negatively.
This thin stick vegetable Asparagus, is not good for your system during cold weather. It is best to be consumed during spring as it is light in color, instead consume dark leafy vegetable.
5. Fried food
Fried food like pakoras, bhatture, kachori, puri seems to be good eating option during winters, but they are very high in trans-fat, which can cause inflammation and also upsurges mucus production, increases high blood pressure and leads to obesity. Therefore, high fat content food is damaging to your health.
6. Baked Food
Baked food items like cookies seems like a best option for the winters while snuggling inside the blanket with a book in the hand, but it consists of saturated fat and during winters this accumulates more fat in the body. This also reduces the metabolic rate and makes you fat.
Coffee is the most preferred beverage in winters but it contains caffeine, which is diuretic in nature, which implies that they induce the passing of urine often. This leads to dehydration and also induces acid formation in the body, which is not good for your health. There is an increase in mucus, shortness of breath and the throat gets dry, therefore they do more harm than good. Hot water any day is a better option.
During winters, it is better to eradicate the consumption of pepper as it will disturb the abdomen and digestion process. Although they are a great cure for your blocked nose and stuffy sinus, but creates a mess inside your stomach. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid food which is very spicy or gives you a burning sensation.
9. White flour
White flour is a poor source of fibre, which can lead to obstruction in the large intestine. It is better to increase your intake of food sources, which are rich in fibre such as jowar, wheat germ and bran. It is also naturally unhealthy as it doesn’t have any nutritional value.
Due to the chilly weather, we tend to consume less water, which makes our body dehydrated. Intake of alcohol initially will warm up your body, but will dehydrate it soon, which can have lot of harmful effects. Furthermore, it can raise your body temperature rapidly, which makes you prone to catching up on cold and make you feel sick.
