The Indian National Congress will elect its next president in the ongoing 2022 presidential election, which is a party internal election. On October 17, 2022, a vote will be cast, and on October 19, 2022, the results will be tallied.

Rahul Gandhi’s resignation as party leader on August 10th, 2019, set off the election. Sonia Gandhi, a previous president, was chosen to serve as acting president by the party’s governing body, the All-India Congress Committee. The COVID-19 outbreak forced a postponement of the presidential election until 2022.

Brief history

2017 saw the majority vote for Rahul Gandhi to become president. Gandhi resigned, though, as a result of the party’s dismal showing in the 2019 Indian general election.

The party’s praesidium chose Sonia Gandhi to serve as acting president. Sonia Gandhi, the mother of Rahul Gandhi, led the party for the longest time, from 1998 to 2017.

News sources claimed that Rahul Gandhi would probably not run for office. Rahul Gandhi will not submit a nomination for the election, as per Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh. Ashok Gehlot was informed by Rahul Gandhi that no Gandhi family member should be the next president.
