As the holiday season approaches, a rush in travel that this week swamped India’s biggest airport eased after officials increased staff and security measures to deal with the increase in travelers. The Delhi airport congestion problem has drawn attention.

Travelers endured hours-long check-in and security lines at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, which resulted in some flight delays.

Scindia cites a “key factor” for the reduction in traffic at the Delhi airport.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, the aviation minister, addressed concerns about the Delhi airport congestion on Friday. The minister cited a “main factor” in his post for the reduction in traffic at Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Images of extended traveler lines at security checkpoints and in line to check their bags at airports have sparked worries. Earlier this week, IndiGo and Air India issued advisories urging customers to arrive three hours before departure.

In just 9 days, @DelhiAirport has added 5 x-ray machines to the security-check area, bringing the total to 18 ATRS/x-ray machines. This is an essential factor in the reduction of congestion at T3, wrote Scindia in a tweet. Scindia went to the Delhi airport earlier this week to assess the Delhi airport congestion situation. Videos and pictures from his visit show him conversing with officials.

Regarding the Delhi airport congestion problem, choices were made immediately.

He made his decision at a high-level government meeting on the subject on Thursday. Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the union home secretary, presided over the meeting. The administration has implemented a number of measures in response to online and offline concerns regarding Delhi airport congestion. Increased deployment of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and immigration police is one of the measures in place.

The minister of aviation wrote on LinkedIn regarding Delhi airport congestion.

Scindia posted about the better situation on LinkedIn on Wednesday. To lessen gridlock at all checkpoints at all major airports, all authorities moved quickly over the last 24 to 36 hours. The text therein stated, “There is less congestion at the T3 (Terminal 3) access ports and check-in desks.”

The Terminal 3 expansion is also anticipated to be completed in October 2023 rather than January 2024, as initially planned. The Center has approved the deployment of 1,400 more CISF personnel in order to handle the growing wait times at the Delhi airport and facilitate the construction of the three terminals.

These steps would also be imitated at the airports in Bengaluru and Mumbai, said Scindia. Travelers have been complaining about similar congestion at the airports in Mumbai and Bengaluru as well. Two more X-ray machines at BIAL are now functioning.

Steps taken by Airlines regarding Delhi airport congestion matter

As per a spokesperson for the airlines, passengers were advised to get to the airport 3.5 hours before their flight.

The airlines, not the airport, have advised passengers to get there 3.5 hours before departure. As per Narayan Rao, the deputy MD of DIAL, “Airlines are providing the advisory for their convenience.”

Air India advised customers to arrive at the airport at least 3.5 hours before domestic flights and 4 hours before international ones. In order to ensure a quick security check, IndiGo urged them to arrive at the airport no later than 3.5 hours before domestic departures. They should also only bring one piece of hand luggage that weighs 7 kilograms. As these are closest to the IndiGo check-in kiosks, IndiGo has also encouraged travelers to use Gates 5 and 6 for entering at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 3.

While SpiceJet has sent out an advisory asking travelers to get at the airport “2.5 hours prior to flight departure time” and “3.5 hours prior” for international flights. Vistara has also recommended that travelers arrive at the airport at least three hours before both domestic and international flights.
