Nasolabial folds, also referred to as smile lines, are skin folds that run from the corners of your mouth to both sides of your nose. Additionally known as laugh lines. As you age, the creases may deepen and become permanent, especially if you smoke or do not use sunscreen on your skin. Specific treatments can reduce their appearance.

Why do smile lines appear? What are they?

Vertical lines known as smile lines originate from the sides of the nose and circle the lips; on occasion, they may even reach the chin. The nasolabial fold and the nasolabial crease are two classifications of these lines. The tissue that hangs over the crease is known as the fold, which runs between the top lip and the cheek.

Some people begin to develop smile lines at an early age, but as they get older, they become deeper due to weight gain, smoking, a lack of collagen, and dental issues (when the teeth no longer support the overlying tissue). Due to the fact that our skin moves when we smile, smile lines can often include creases around the eyes. Permanent wrinkles develop as a result of years of smiling and the destruction of underlying tissue.

The most common reasons for nasolabial folds or smile lines are:

1.Getting older:

As you become older, your cheekbones may flatten and any drooping skin may be pulled down by gravity. Additionally, your skin has fewer elastin and collagen. These organic components are what give skin its elasticity, toughness, stretchiness, and capacity to maintain its original shape.

2. Smoking:

Smoking damages the skin’s collagen and elastin.

3. Sun damage:

The sun’s rays also degrade collagen and elastin.

4. Gain or loss of weight:

You could have extra, looser skin if you drop a lot of weight. You might have larger cheeks if you acquire weight. Both scenarios can make nasolabial folds more noticeable.

Treatment

Although they are an aesthetic concern, smile lines do not necessarily need to be treated because they do not pose a risk for any health conditions.

A few people may want to get rid of their nasolabial folds if they think they are particularly prominent. Several cosmetic procedures can lessen or even eliminate nasolabial folds.. Consult a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon about nasolabial fold treatment if you decide to do so. Options consist of:

1.Derma Fillers:

Implants that are inserted just beneath the skin are called dermal fillers. They can smooth out wrinkles by plumping up the skin.

In order to elevate the cheeks and hide the smile lines, a doctor can inject dermal fillers just beneath the skin in the upper cheek area or the nasolabial fold area.

Fillers can help hide nasolabial creases, but they cannot completely erase them. Additionally, they can be employed to make the neighboring skin appear younger and fuller.

To lessen the appearance of the nasolabial folds, doctors might also inject fat into the area. Similar to the dermal filler, the fat is extracted from another part of the body and injected to fill the space.

2. Procedures for tightening the skin:

Treatments using lasers, ultrasound, or radio waves can encourage the creation of collagen and tighten loose skin.

3. OTC creams:

The cost of using OTC creams to cure wrinkles is lower. Because of its alleged capability to neutralize the free radicals that can produce wrinkles, retinol is one of the substances that has received the most research.

4. Shots of botulinum toxin:

Botulinum toxin injections, which are frequently referred to by the brand name “Botox®,” are best recognized for reducing the appearance of frown lines between your eyes. But another possible use of Botox is to weaken and relax a particular muscle that is responsible for nasolabial folds. For a few months, botox injections might temporarily lessen the appearance of nasolabial creases.

5. Surgery:

Cosmetic surgery can reshape and restructure your skin and underlying tissues. A cheek lift or facelift are options for nasolabial fold reduction.

If you want more significant effects that stay longer, surgery can be an option. Smile lines can be removed most completely and permanently with a facelift (rhytidectomy). In a single operation, this can treat lines around your lips and your eyes. In addition to a facelift, your plastic surgeon may also advise eyelid surgery.
