Old is Gold, this has been proved all over again with classic shows like Mahabharata, Ramayana and Shaktiman being telecast on Doordarshan had hooked the audience to an extent that as per BARC (Broad Cast Audience Research Council), the channel became the most-watched channel for the week ended April 3.

Ramayana was aired first time in the 1980s which accumulated enormous viewership; people would get glued to their screen with pin-drop silence and no movement at all. They will watch as if “God” is present in front of them. The Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Mr.Prakash Javadekar declared the retelecast of the popular mythological series resulted in an unprecedented rise in the audience, making the viewer nostalgic as they went back to their childhood. As people are forced to stay home and maintain social distancing because the pandemic is looking forward to entertainment to pass time.

In the course of the lockdown that has stemmed from the halt of production of TV shows and movies, the announcement of bringing back the old mythological series like Ramayana and Mahabharat and other admired shows like Shaktiman and Buniyad on Doordarshan seems to be the best decision for the channel and audience also. These shows dominated TV broadcasting in the nation when they were broadcast initially as Doordarshan was the only channel across the nation.

The return of the masterpiece has increased the overall TV viewership by 4%. People are excited to see the two epics during this lockdown. Shaktiman too had a huge fan base when it was launched and was even translated into many languages. Buniyad too was a popular series and hooked to the audience to the TV as people could connect with the show. The viewers have sumptuous love for these old serials too. The inclination of viewers towards television consumption has spiked during this lockdown. People are staying at home and watching these old classic shows seems like a fresh breath of air. Two episodes of Ramayana are being telecast on Doordarshan everyday at 9 am and 9 pm.

The iconic series gathered 4.5 crore viewers on Saturday evening and 4 crore viewers on Sunday morning. In the beginning, Ramayan and Mahabharat pulled the highest numbers but now Shaktiman is adding up on the huge traffic. Ramayana is also catching up the attention of younger viewers as well. It is more like an opportunity to sit together and watch the show with your family. This wouldn’t have been possible before lockdown as individuals have become self-centered and their priorities have changed with so many options available with straightforward and nook content.
